What Is DiscoverEU?

DiscoverEU is an Erasmus+ initiative that gives 18-year-olds the chance to travel across Europe by train, for free.
You explore, meet new people, learn about other cultures, and experience Europe like never before.
As a DiscoverEU traveller, you’ll explore Europe’s rich diversity, heritage, and values, and grow your independence along the way.
Think: adventure, freedom, friendships, self-discovery, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be European.

Who can take part?

You can apply do DiscoverEU if:

  • You’re 17-18 years old at the time of the application round
  • You’re curious, open-minded, and ready to travel
  • You want to learn more about Europe, its cultures, and its people

You don’t need perfect grades or a fancy CV — selection is done through a quick online quiz.

What is included in DiscoverEU?

If selected, you’ll receive:

  • A free travel pass (mostly train-based, with flexible options for island and remote regions like Malta)
  • The chance to travel for up to 30 days within a 7-month window
  • Access to the DiscoverEU Travel App to help you plan and stay connected
  • Invitations to DiscoverEU Meetups. Fun cultural events in major cities
  • Discounts on cultural visits, learning activities, transport, and accommodation with your DiscoverEU European Youth Card

There’s also extra support available for young people with fewer opportunities, including help with travel and planning.

When Can You Apply?

There are two calls per year — usually in:

  • Spring (April)
  • Autumn (October)

Applications are submitted through the European Youth Portal. Check https://youth.europa.eu/discovereu for the next opening date, or follow @erasmus.mt to stay updated.

How to Apply for DiscoverEU?

  • Go to youth.europa.eu/discovereu 🔗
  • Fill in the short application form
  • Complete the EU quiz
  • Wait for results and start planning your dream trip!

Good to Know!

  • You can apply solo or with a group (up to 5 friends)
  • Most travel is by train, but alternatives are offered for islands or remote regions like Malta
